California regulations describe a residential alcohol or drug recovery or treatment facility as a program that provides 24-hour residential, nonmedical recovery or treatment services. What Is PHP Day Treatment?
A Partial Hospitalization Program, commonly called PHP or Day Treatment, provides intensive, structured addiction treatment during the day without requiring the client to live at the treatment facility.
Despite the word “hospitalization,” PHP does not necessarily take place in a hospital. In addiction treatment, the term generally refers to a level of care that offers substantial therapeutic structure while allowing the client to return home or to supportive housing outside program hours.
At New Life Recovery Centers, clients in PHP Day Treatment participate in therapy and group sessions for a minimum of six hours per day, up to six days per week, depending on the individualized treatment plan.
PHP provides more independence than residential treatment, but it still represents a significant treatment commitment.
What Happens During PHP Day Treatment?
PHP provides much of the therapeutic structure associated with residential rehab, but clients do not remain at the treatment center overnight.

PHP can be appropriate when weekly counseling or a lower-intensity schedule would not provide enough structure, but overnight residential care is unnecessary.
Can Someone Start With PHP Instead of Residential Rehab?
For some people, yes. PHP may be an appropriate starting level when withdrawal can be managed safely without residential placement, the person is physically and emotionally stable, the home supports recovery, attendance is reliable, and an assessment indicates that 24-hour residential structure is unnecessary.
However, choosing PHP only because it is less disruptive can be a mistake if the person needs more support.
Can Someone Move From Residential Rehab to PHP?
Yes. PHP is frequently used as a step-down level after residential treatment. Not everyone follows every step, and some clients may begin directly in PHP. The transition should be based on current progress and stability rather than a predetermined number of days.
